Integrating Ethanol Production with Municipal Waste Management in Catawba County - UNC Charlotte

The goal of this collaborative project between the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Catawba County Regional EcoComplex and Resource Recovery Facility, and Novozymes North America Inc. is to construct, operate, and financially evaluate a small-scale cellulosic ethanol biofuel production facility that integrates with municipal waste management in Catawba County, NC.  In this project, municipal paper waste and other cellulosic biomass generated during normal landfill operations will be converted into ethanol fuel for on-site use. This project will advance the goals of the Biofuels Center of North Carolina by producing significant ethanol and demonstrating a functional model that could be incorporated in municipal operations around the state to help move NC toward growing and producing 10% of its liquid transport fuels by 2017. The ethanol plant will serve as a permanent and ongoing biofuel production, testing and educational facility within EcoComplex sustainability and energy production initiatives.
