Delivering an Enzyme-Based Solution for the North Carolina Biodiesel Industry -Chatham County Economic Development Corporation

The Chatham County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) in cooperation with Piedmont Biofuels Industrial, LLC, Novozymes A/S, USDA-ARS, and the Clean Energy Alliance are working together to commercialize an enzyme-based solution for the biodiesel industry. Over the next year, this group will optimize the process of esterification of waste fats and oils into fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) as defined by ASTM D6751. Under this proposal, CCEDC, Piedmont, and supporting collaborators will also refine a commercialization plan and a go-to market strategy for the NC biofuels industry and beyond. The over-arching goal of this project will provide biodiesel producers a low cost, bolt-on technology to successfully convert low quality feedstocks in biofuel. This technology could open up over 300 million gallons of raw material to NC producers each year and help meet our 10% North Carolina grown and produced liquid fuel goals by 2017.
